Biological Sciences

The biological sciences curriculum, housed in the Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences, is designed to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of living systems and how they operate. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and experienced faculty allow students to experience innovative experimental approaches to learning. An interdisciplinary approach provides our students with critical analytical and communication skills.

Our degree programs give students a firm foundation for pursuing science-related career paths in industry, medical professions, teaching, or pursuing an advanced graduate-level degrees. Concentrations include pre-medicine, neuroscience, and environmental studies. A diverse set of elective courses allow students to delve into more specialized topics such as botany, cellular & microbiology, ecology or zoology.

Undergraduate research opportunities and our accomplished faculty (including Dr. Lana Vojvodic Kruse -  recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award and Dr. Luke Holbrook's research, recently published in the journal Science) set Rowan apart from other universities. Biological Sciences majors have opportunities to engage in research spanning the sub-disciplines within biology, including animal behavior, cell biology, ecology and environmental biology, evolutionary biology, molecular and structural biology, neuroscience, symbiotic interactions, vertebrate morphology and paleontology, and virology.

Students pursuing graduate-level programs in the health and medical fields are supported and advised by Rowan’s Office of Pre-Health Programs.  The office has affiliations and partnerships with schools including Cooper Medical School at Rowan University and the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Whether it is going on to graduate studies at prestigious universities such as Harvard, working at research institutions like the Coriell Institute, or attending vet school in London, our students excel in their academic and professional careers.
