Master's Degree in Data Science

Data science is the art and science of extracting knowledge from "Big Data". It is used in industry, government, health, and other fields to make important decisions. Data science helps healthcare organizations make decisions about customer relationship management, physicians identify effective treatments and best practices, patients receive better and more affordable healthcare, and much more.

Through this program, students learn to use data analytics skills in any area of specialization. It prepares them to work as Big Data analysts or to apply the same techniques in other disciplines. The program will also help students understand issues related to health data, health privacy, and economics.


What can I expect from this program?

Graduates of the M.S. in Data Science program get a strong foundation with required courses in Data Mining, Visual Analytics, Multivariate Statistics, and Data Warehousing.

Students then have choices of tracks depending on their interests and long term goals.

M.S. in Data Science students complete a 30 credit-hour program including the required courses mentioned above as well as a variety of core and elective courses in Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Web and Text Mining. Students can concentrate in a number of fields of interest including Health Data, Business Analytics, Machine Learning, or Statistical Learning.

All students complete a capstone course that incorporates a real-world problem (often provided by one of our industry partners).

Who can enroll in this program?

The M.S. in Data Science is designed for students with a Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field. Ideally, students should already have a background in calculus, linear algebra, probability and random variables, proficiency in programming, data structures, and basic algorithms.

How can I apply?

The Masters of Computer Science and the three Certificates of Graduate Studies are administered by the Global Learning & Partnerships of Rowan University (GLP).

As Data Science is a vital area for the College of Science and Mathematics, we anticipate expanding both our graduate and undergraduate offerings in the near future.
