The 2021 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM for short) is being held from December 7th to December 11th. The conference features researchers from around the globe, including some researchers from right here in Rowan University’s Computer Science Department. On December 9th, Dylan Perry, Dr. Ning Wang, and Dr. Shen-Shyang Ho are presenting the culmination of their research.

Over the course of the past year, this team of three has been hard at work conducting research on smart devices and smart home technology. The research project was focused on the energy demand of these technologies, with the ultimate goal of making energy management easier and cheaper.

For this project, the team used machine learning to help make predictions about energy consumption. Dylan conducted research on existing machine learning methods, and implemented them into different structures in order to see which ones performed the best. He started out by testing more basic methods, and then panned out to other methods as the project progressed.

Due to the limited sensory data collected by each Internet of Things device, the trained model has low accuracy. In order to avoid this issue, a specific machine learning technique known as “federated learning” can be used, which allows devices to collaboratively train a shared deep learning model. For this reason, the team opted to utilize federated learning for this project.

Dylan says that he learned a lot from this research project over the past year. It taught him a lot about programming in general, as well as what it’s like to work in a professional environment. This project opened his eyes to a more academic career, and also allowed him to get more directly involved in the Computer Science Department. He highly recommends that other CS students also get involved if they can, as it is a great opportunity.

When asked about how his experience working on this research project differed from his expectations, Dylan said that the project was less stressful than he had initially anticipated. The task seemed daunting at first, but Dr. Wang and Dr. Ho were very supportive the whole way through. There were still some aspects of it that he had to get used to, such as new programming techniques, but overall he enjoyed being involved in the project.

That is a general overview of Rowan University’s involvement at GLOBECOM. This conference features great minds from around the globe, and having researchers from right here at Rowan has been a wonderful opportunity. We hope you’ll support Dylan, Dr. Wang, and Dr. Ho as they present their research at the conference. Also, please look forward to more news of Rowan’s Computer Science Department in the future.
