Activities and Goals of the ACS Southern New Jersey Chapter
The ACS-South Jersey Local Section has set a main goal for the support of science education in the Southern New Jersey counties. We also offer a chance for collegial comradery among our members through six monthly meetings at different locations in South Jersey (third Tuesday of the month). These meetings will normally consist of a dinner and a guest speaker from local industry or academia.
With the help of our members at Rowan University and Richard Stockton College, we have supported three of the main Science Fairs in our area (Jersey Shore, Coriell, and Salem) by providing judges and awards for the Junior and Senior Divisions. This year we are hoping to provide support the Cumberland Science Fair. In the past we have also been able to support local school fairs with judges.
With support from the National ACS, we also sponsor a Project SEED program for High School students that have completed one year of chemistry. Project SEED is a chance to perform research during the summer under the supervision of Chemistry Dept at Rowan University. At present, each year we sponsor two students from South Jersey area.
This year the ACS-South Jersey Local Section is starting a new program for grants. We are sponsoring five grants to the local Chemistry High School teachers for equipment in their classes. In addition we sponsor an awards program to those high school Seniors who have expressed an interest in the sciences. This student is chosen by his teachers and completed at least one year of chemistry.
In addition to our education outreach, we've also recently hosted the annual awards dinner for the Mid-Atlantic Regional section of ACS (MARM) and hope to host a full MARM meeting in the near future.
