Abstract
The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the semester. Starting with inclusive
strategies that build belonging and center the student experiences is crucial for student success in
introductory chemistry courses. Additionally, with content heavy courses like General Chemistry,
developing metacognition and study skills alongside content awareness builds a foundation for long
term success. In this presentation I will share strategies and activities for the first day of class. These
activities encourage students to engage in metacognitive exercises, while positioning them as
experts in their own learning who are equipped to be successful in the course. As generative
artificial intelligence changes the way students approach school, focusing on the learning process
bolsters academic integrity in the classroom by providing a common framework between instructors
and students. I will also share strategies for chemistry specific discussions which help students
understand how academic dishonesty undermines our shared goals.
