Abstract
An efficient catalytic phenolic oxidation reaction under continuous flow conditions has been developed. Using molecular oxygen and salcomine, the quinone products of multiple phenols and naphthols were synthesized in up to 87% yield with a residence time of 20 min. The effect of reaction parameters, such as choice of solvent and increased pressures (up to 100 psi) were examined with regard to reaction efficiency (residence time and yield) and product selectivity (para- vs. ortho-quinone). Currently, the synthesis of several N-heterocycles (e.g. phenazines) via amine condensation reactions of in situ generated quinones is being explored. A salcomine oxidation of phenols has not been studied previously under continuous flow conditions and continuous flow technology provides a safe way for undergraduates to study and scale up the reaction, since the reactor volume and amount of oxygen in the reactor is small.
