September Monthly Meeting
September Monthly Meeting
Abstract: We may all know the basics of how alcohol is produced, but have you thought about what makes wines different from one another? Is white wine only made from white grapes? Does it matter if my wine is left in a hot car all day? Does the type of bottle or closure actually make a difference? What actually causes a hangover? These are some of the questions we’ll be examining through a chemical lens during this talk. From the grape vines and soil, through the fermentation, production, and aging processes, we’ll be talking about the various chemicals and reactions that are responsible for the final product.
Location: The September meeting will be held at Bonesaw Brewing Company in Glassboro, NJ. It is conveniently located near Rowan University and NJ Route 55. Directions via Google Maps can be accessed by clicking this link.
Bio: Jennifer Martin is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Stockton University. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Developmental Biology from Penn State Berks (2011). She received her Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Virginia (2016), under the direction of Dr. Linda Columbus. During her PhD studies, her research focused on membrane protein interactions involved in pathogenesis. Her current research at Stockton University focuses on furthering our understanding of the structure/function relationship of proteins by investigating the function of enzymes that have previously determined structures.
