Minor for Math
Minor for Math
DS Minor for Math Majors
The Data Science minor requires 2 programming courses, 1 statistics course, 1 database course, 1 data mining course, 1 information visualization course, and 2 restricted elective math or CS courses.
The minor consists of the following programming courses, which should be taken sequentially:
- CS 04.103 Computer Science and Programming
- CS 04.225 Principles of Data Structures
The Math student should take the following required CS courses:
- CS 04.430 Database Systems: Theory & Programming
- CS 07.370 Introduction to Information Visualization
This path for the minor requires the following math courses:
- MATH 01.130 Calculus I
- MATH 01.131 Calculus II
- MATH 03.160 Discrete Structures
The following statistics courses are recommended, as they fulfill requirements for the Math major:
- STAT 02.360 Probability & Random Variables
- STAT 02.340 Elements of Statistical Learning (fulfills data mining course requirement for minor)
As a Math major, it would likely be more efficient to complete 2 of the following restricted elective math courses:
- STAT 02.361 Mathematical Statistics
- STAT 02.371 Design of Experiments
- MATH 03.411 Deterministic Models in Operations Research OR MATH 03.412 Stochastic Models in Operations Research
