May 2024

A special spring update from the Rowan Math Team president:

Hi everybody!! Math Team President Chrissy here again to tell you all about all the community outreach, events, and general hijinks the Math Team got into this spring!

The Spring 2024 semester has been an explosion of activity for members of the Rowan Math Team. We kicked off our event season in March with the annual Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. It was an especially momentous year for us; not only did Rowan get to host the event in the height of its centennial celebration, but our own fabulous Carter Profico, Anthony Segrest, and Tess Errickson helped Rowan vault to fourth place in the team component of the competition! We ended the day with poster presentations from undergraduate math researchers all around New Jersey and finally a special lecture about one mathematician’s journey using graph theory to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

April brought gorgeous warm weather and our first (and certainly not last) annual Proofs On Pavement event, where some of Rowan’s best and brightest gathered at Robinson Circle to cover the sidewalks with some of their favorite proofs of their undergraduate careers. “Q is dense in R” was especially popular–short, ingenious, useful and non-obvious!

Then, just a few short weeks later, the Math Team shoved off to the big apple for a day of sightseeing and rollicking fun at the National Museum of Mathematics!!! Everyone agrees that riding a bicycle with square wheels was the highlight of the year! Finally, we ended the semester by working in collaboration with Dr. Kristen Barrett to put on some fabulous activities for Rowan’s annual Bring Your Child to Work Day.

That’s all for now! I wish you all amazing luck with finals this week and a restful, restorative summer break!
