Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is a process of learning through direct experience, where individuals actively engage in activities and reflect on those experiences to gain knowledge and skills. It emphasizes hands-on involvement and the application of theories in real-world situations, making learning more effective and memorable.
The College of Science and Mathematics currently offers the below 1 credit course in the experiential learning category.
Pinelands Adventures offers paddling trips along the scenic Batsto and Mullica Rivers, along with guided hikes and other land-based explorations throughout the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Founded in 2015 as an initiative of the Pinelands Alliance, Pinelands Adventures provides both self-guided and guided outdoor experiences, educational programs, community outreach, and presentations.
Our mission is to help people connect with the Pinelands through fun, informative nature experiences that are designed to have a low impact on the environment and a high impact on visitors. We strive to inspire appreciation, deepen understanding, and encourage more people to become stewards of this unique and treasured ecosystem.

Structured Experiential Learning: Pinelands Adventures, at Rowan University
This course provides current and prospective students with the opportunity to earn college credit by completing experiences with Pinelands Adventures. Participants in this course gain at least 20 hours of practical experience exploring the New Jersey Pinelands under the direction of Pinelands Adventures staff, with learning assessed by faculty at Rowan University, and earn a single (1) college credit hour. Students will gain first-hand knowledge of the natural and human history of the pinelands, develop observational skills, experience paddling a canoe or kayak in remote areas of the pinelands, and learn how the living and nonliving components of the environment combine to form ecosystems. Learning experiences in this course take place outside of the traditional classroom setting and are intended to help participants clarify career plans, values, and enhance future learning. Participants document their learning by completing learning assessments after each experience and submit a final reflection linking their overall experience to their academic, professional, or personal life. This course is graded as passing or no-credit.

Evaluation of Participants and Grading Procedure
Participants must complete the following requirements within a two-year period:
- Book experiences with Pinelands Adventures under the same name and contact information (e-mail address)
- Complete experiences worth a total of 20 points (see Table 1)
- Choose experiences that include each of the five focus areas (Table 1)
- Demonstrate learning by completing a quiz, within one week, after completion of each individual experience
- Once all experiences are completed, write a reflection on how your overall experience in this program is related to your academic, professional, or personal life. This reflection should be at least 1 page long (2-3 paragraphs), with a maximum length of 2 pages, and discuss the importance of specific experiences in this program.
- Send your reflection to the Instructor of Record at Rowan University along with your Rowan Banner ID, using the same e-mail that you used to book your experiences with Pineland Adventures.
- If you do not have a Rowan Banner ID, let the Instructor of Record know that you need one, and you will be provided with a form to complete.
- Participants pay a service fee (the “credit by exam fee”) to Rowan University
- Credit will be awarded at the end of the current semester
Additional important considerations for Participants:
- Each experience can only be completed once for credit toward the 20-point total.
- Failure to complete a quiz within one week of completing an experience means that you need to repeat or choose another experience.
- Credit for this course will be first awarded at the end of the Fall 2026 semester.
Grading Procedure:
- Participants initiate grading activity by the Instructor of Record by sending their reflection and Banner ID to the instructor of record via e-mail
- The Instructor of Record requests verification of participation/attendance from Pinelands Adventures using the student’s contact information (name and e-mail).
- Pinelands Adventures provides the instructor of Record with attendance verification (dates of attendance and experiences completed from their booking system) and access to completed learning assessments (approved quizzes).
- Instructor of Record verifies that participant has satisfactorily demonstrated learning and completed requirements from credit
- Instructor of Record will direct participant on how to successfully earn credit
Course Evaluation and Assessment
The course will be evaluated through existing procedures (programmatic assessment) within the BBS department. Postexperience quizzes will contain questions to assess learning, but also address the participant experience, allowing Rowan to monitor the participant experience and assist the partner organization (Pinelands Adventures; a unit of The Pinelands Alliance) to improve experiences.
