Photonics Concentration for Physics

Optics and photonics play an increasingly important role in the computer, communication, and security industries. Optical methods are frequently employed in industry for research and quality control. This physics concentration in photonics will prepare students to enter the high-tech workforce in optics research and development. The required courses give students a solid theoretical background, extensive hands-on experience, and in-depth knowledge of the optical design.

In order to complete the concentration, students should take the Math Methods + Additional Restricted Elective option (instead of the Linear Algebra + ODE option); then take the following courses to fill the resulting 4 Restricted Electives:

Requirements (14 semester hours-within the Physics Major)

Course Semester hours
Optics and Light (PHYS00.340) 4
Intro to Optical Design (PHYS00.345) 4
Electricity and Magnetism II (PHYS00.321) 3
Laser Physics (PHYS00.347 3

Note that is possible to take the concentration while also completing the Linear Algebra + ODE track (and thus still be able to complete a Math minor), however, this requires taking one of the concentration courses as a Free Elective.
