Accelerated 7 year (3+4) Biophysics (BS) and Medical Degree (MD/DO)

In partnership with the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) and the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM), Rowan University is proud to offer several accelerated 7-Year Medical Programs (also called 3+4 year programs) to incoming freshman. These rigorous, accelerated degree programs provide an opportunity for exceptional students to apply to medical school during their junior year at Rowan and enter medical school in their fourth year.  Students who successfully complete the program receive a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and go on to a partnering medical school to complete a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) in seven years, rather than the traditional eight.
 
While acceptance into the undergraduate program at Rowan University does not guarantee acceptance into the partnering medical school, students will benefit from additional exposure to the medical school campus, supportive pre-health workshops, and enrichment activities. Further, our accelerated BS/MD and BS/DO programs are supported by the Rowan University Office of Health Professions, which offers one-on-one student advising on coursework and preparing for the medical school application process.
 
Through the Department of Physics & Astronomy, students may pursue one of the following:
  • Biophysics (BS) and Medicine (MD): After students complete their junior year at Rowan University, they may apply to begin medical studies at CMSRU in what would traditionally be their senior year. Rowan University will confer a BS degree after the successful completion of 1st year medical school courses at CMSRU. Upon completion of all undergraduate curricular and extracurricular requirements, candidates in this track must submit an application and MCAT results to CMSRU and successfully complete an interview with the admissions committee.  BS/MD Sample Course Sequence
  • Biophysics (BS) and Osteopathic Medicine (DO): After students complete their junior year at Rowan University, they may apply to begin osteopathic medicine studies at SOM in what would traditionally be their senior year. Rowan University will confer a BS degree after the successful completion of 1st year medical school courses at SOM. Upon completion of all undergraduate curricular and extracurricular requirements, candidates in this track must submit an application and MCAT results to SOM and successfully complete an interview with the admissions committee.  BS/DO Sample Course Sequence
 
The BS in in Biophysics is an interdisciplinary program that applies physics-based methods to study biological systems.  Biophysics is a great choice for students who excel in mathematics and physics but are interested in problems related to biology or medicine. Rowan's Biophysics program begins with general physics courses geared toward the development of mathematical and analytical skills along with introductory work in biology and chemistry. Upper level courses refine these skills, shape advanced problem-solving capabilities and begin focusing students on biological and biomedical applications of physics.  Students in this program are required  to participate in undergraduate laboratory-based research.
