April 11, 2025: Debunking Common Messages About Mathematics Teaching (Grades K-5)
Two common messages about teaching mathematics are the following: “We teach students multiple ways of solving a math problem so that they can choose the method that works best for them. Students should work together and explain their answers in math class because often students can understand each other better than they can understand the teacher.” Messages such as these do not provide teachers with useful guidance about how to teach mathematics in ways that promote conceptual understanding. In this session, we will explore meaningful reasons why we teach students multiple ways to solve math problems and why it is so important for students to collaborate and explain their thinking during small-group and whole-class discussions.
May 19, 2025: Artificial Intelligence in the Math Classroom: The Good, Bad and Ugly (All grades)
Teachers will explore various AI apps from one that can tutor students to one that can grade open-ended math problems. Come learn and discuss if AI is good, bad or ugly for the math classroom.May 22, 2025: Data Science for All in the High School
Participants will learn and get access to free data science high school curriculum and further discuss where and when students should be exposed to data science in high school.May 23, 2025: Thin Slicing Lessons Building Thinking Classroom Style (All grades)
Participants will be provided thin sliced lessons (all grades) and be given time to develop their own thin sliced lessons. The goal is for all participants to leave with multiple lessons.
