Certificates of Undergraduate Studies (CUGS)
Certificates of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) are available to undergraduate students at Rowan University and select CUGS* are available to learners outside of Rowan University.
For current students, they are a great way to complement your degree program! We suggest contacting the certificate coordinator to learn more - your academic advisor can then enroll you officially if you decide to pursue the CUGS.
For learners outside of Rowan University, you can enroll in any of the specialized CUGS* whether you are a degree holder or not. These certificates are geared towards professional skills and development - considering enrolling to gain applicable and technical skills towards advancing your career.
Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Bioinformatics
The CUGS in Bioinformatics provides a sequence of courses on handling and understanding big biological data, enabling students to pursue advanced bioinformatics or other biomedical programs.
Biotechnology
The CUGS in Biotechnology provides content knowledge and laboratory skills to students pursuing careers in bioengineering, biomedicine, molecular biology, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical research.
Brewing Science
The CUGS in Brewing Science provides skills-based training for employment or advancement in the brewing industry. In this program students will understand the industrial process of beer production through practical application of lectures, labs, site visits, and on-site training.
Medical Laboratory Science
The CUGS in Medical Laboratory Science provides the scientific and clinical training needed to enter the Clinical Laboratory workforce. Students who complete this degree will be well equipped for entry level positions in a variety of clinical settings.

Cannabinoid Chemistry
The CUGS in Cannabinoid Chemistry is focused on cannabinoids, which are a major class of pharmacologically active molecules found in cannabis.
Cosmetic Science
The CUGS in Cosmetic Science will provide students with specialized study to enhance knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the cosmetic industry.
Phamaceutical Sciences

Azure Fundamentals
This CUGS is designed to offer students the opportunity of a specialized study to provide students with experience in key courses of this discipline at the undergraduate level. This CUGS prepares students to sit for the following certification exams: Microsoft AZ-900
Blockchain Technologies and Cryptocurrencies
This CUGS provides students with experience with basic programming (e.g., Python), cryptographic techniques used in blockchain technologies, blockchain programming, and the applications of blockchain.
Computer Programming
This CUGS is designed to increase student marketability by enhancing their technical skill set - specifically focused programming proficiencies. These proficiencies may be easily applied to each student’s major disciplines and be beneficial when working in their specified fields.
Cybersecurity
This CUGS is designed to increase student knowledge in all areas of cyber security including targeted phishing scams, data theft, and other online vulnerabilities. This CUGS would be very attractive to the many employers looking to keep their companies safe in the new cyber-world.

Marine Science
This CUGS integrates the physical, chemical, geological, and biological features and processes of oceans. Students completing this program will gain a foundational understanding of ocean systems and the tools used to collect samples and data in oceans.
Geography, Planning, & Sustainability
Environmental Humanities
This CUGS introduces STEM students to the methods of the Humanities to interrogate the human contexts of environmental issues, which are crucial for effectively applying STEM findings and developments in complex cultural worlds. At the same time, this program offers students in the Humanities opportunities to explore how the critical thinking and communication skills they have developed might be applied to other fields and career paths.

Environmental Policy & Economics
This CUGS provides students with an interdisciplinary approach to create and develop efficient ways to protect and enhance the world's economic and environmental resources. Students will learn how to design and assess the impact of environmental regulations and policies through an interdisciplinary approach using economics, geography, planning, public policy and sociology.
Food Systems Planning
This CUGS is designed for students interested in studying the systems that provide and support food within the planning discipline. Students will learn foundational concepts in planning, food, culture, land-use and transportation. This holistic perspective will help students understand the many complicated dimensions of food systems in the contemporary U.S., as well as how planners might intervene in these systems to help communities achieve healthy food outcomes.
Geographic Information Systems Foundations
This CUGS provides an introduction to how information becomes data that can be presented visually in the form of a map, to communicate to an audience, yield new analytical insights, or present patterns and relationships unavailable in other forms. The program is intended to expose students to key concepts, practices, and techniques in GIS and their application to geospatial/environmental problems.
Sustainable Urbanism
This CUGS emphasizes the social and place-based dimensions of sustainability, from issues of social equity to the role of communication technologies and aesthetics. Students will be exposed to key concepts, practices, and technologies in sustainability and their application to urban environments.

Paleoart and Visualization
This CUGS offers a solid introduction to the science of paleontology and the artistic techniques behind reconstructing prehistoric life and environments. You will have the flexibility to select courses that fulfill your artistic and paleontological interests.
Paleontology Foundations
This CUGS offers a solid introduction to Earth history and evolution. The program balances practical skills with current theory while emphasizing the importance of field research. Students are immersed in popular science, debates, and new research frontiers.

The CUGS in Statistics provides a sequence of courses that introduces students to analyzing data with modern tools and is designed to equip students with the analytical tools and capacities to needed interact with real-world data in a research environment while also accommodating the foundation in the field.
Physics & Astronomy
Health Physics
The CUGS in Health Physics provides a sequence of courses that combines Physics topics (such as nuclear, particle, and radiation physics) with necessary biological topics (such as biophysics and physiology), enabling students to pursue certification or higher degree training in the areas of Health Physics and Medical Physics.

Photonics
Demand in areas of optical design, instrumentation design and application use, and laser-based communication systems is high. While a generalized physics degree has allowed some to gain employment, they require significant amounts of specialized education and training to excel. This CUGS allows one to get that education.
Psychology
Industrial Organizational Psychology
This CUGS will teach students to apply psychological theories to critical issues in the fields of psychology, business, and industry. Students will become adept at small group theory and team processes, dynamics of leadership and management, and the structure and procedures of organizational development.

Human Centered Health Solutions
This CUGS will teach students how to take the complexity and limitations of human information processing into account when designing systems. They will gain an appreciation of the cognitive, physical, environmental, and social aspects in design, and understand the impact of cognitive biases.
Psychology of Sport and Exercise
The CUGS in Psychology of Sport and Exercise enhances students' knowledge in the field of psychology and performance in the sport and exercise environment.
