CS Faculty Innovation Spotlight: Dr. Tony Breitzman Featured in IEEE Spectrum!

We’re thrilled to highlight that Dr. Tony Breitzman, a valued Professor part of our Computer Science faculty, is showcased in the June 2025 issue of IEEE Spectrum for his pioneering work with 1790 Analytics on patent evaluation and innovation impact.

Together with co-founder Patrick Thomas, Tony helped develop the updated Patent Power Scorecard, using interactive visualizations to reveal major global patent trends. Their analysis uncovers:

1. Patent quality over quantity, spotlighting organizations whose patents have far-reaching influence—such as SEL surpassing TSMC in impact despite fewer patents.

2. Sector-specific insights: Apple’s high-impact electronics patents, consolidation in aerospace, and Harvard’s rise to #1 in academic patent influence.

3. The role of geopolitics and market dynamics driving patenting strategies worldwide.

This work emphasizes that real innovation is measured by influence: technologies that others build upon and advance.
