PhD in Computer Science
A Ph.D. in Computer Science is for students who want to do more than use existing technology. It is for people who want to investigate difficult problems, develop new ideas, and contribute original research to the field.
The Ph.D. in Computer Science combines advanced coursework with intensive research under the guidance of faculty mentors. Students develop broad knowledge of computer science, build expertise in a chosen research area, and complete an original dissertation that makes a meaningful contribution to the field.
The program is designed for students interested in careers in university research and teaching, industrial research and development, advanced technical leadership, and other positions where the ability to conduct independent research is important.

Research Methods
Students then develop deeper expertise through a 12-credit field of study selected in consultation with their dissertation advisor. Core courses and field-of-study courses are separate, giving students both breadth across computer science and depth in the area where they intend to conduct research.
There is no single path through a computer science Ph.D. Students work with their advisors to build a program around their research interests. Possible fields of study include:

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Students interested in AI can pursue advanced work in areas such as machine learning, large language models, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, data mining, and related areas. -
Cybersecurity
Students can study problems involving computer and network security, cryptography, cyber defense, secure systems, and related areas. -
Computer Networks and Communications
Students interested in networking can study network architecture, wireless systems, Internet protocols, network security, and emerging communication technologies. -
Computer Systems
Students may focus on operating systems, distributed computing, system programming, transactional cyber systems, computer architecture, and related infrastructure. -
Software Engineering
Students interested in software research can develop expertise in areas such as software engineering methods, databases, human-centered computing, and advanced software design. -
Computer Science Education
Students interested in academic careers or computing education can also incorporate computer science education into their doctoral studies. The program specifically encourages students interested in academic careers to consider computer science education as an additional field of study.
