New Bachelors Degree in Cybersecurity

As cybersecurity evolves and shapes the way we learn and communicate, it is our job to keep students in the loop!

Over the summer, our department developed a new undergraduate degree, the Bachelors of Science in Cybersecurity. The courses offered through the B.S. Cybersecurity major provides interested students analytical and technical skills they need to pursue careers in the ever-changing field of cybersecurity. Students are given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience both inside and outside of the classroom by exploring cybersecurity. Whether you are already interested in cybersecurity, or want to pursue it, now is the time to get started and get involved!

Through the Cybersecurity major, students can develop an understanding of how digital systems work and how they can be protected. Students may explore topics such as:

  • Digital Forensics
  • Offensive/Defensive Cybersecurity
  • Ethical Hacking
  • Network Hardening
  • Cybersecurity management, Policy, and Risk
  • Cybersecurity Threats

The courses offered for the degree are designed to help you earn certifications like CompTIA and Security+. In addition to preparing you for foundational certification exams, our courses provide the practical knowledge and credentials required to successfully apply for positions across the cybersecurity field.

For cybersecurity students, some of the most valuable learning experiences can happen outside of the classroom. Cybersecurity-related clubs and organizations can give students opportunities to explore topics that interest them, meet peers that have similar goals, and gain experience outside of their basic coursework. Even if you are already familiar with cybersecurity or are just beginning to explore the field, getting involved is the best way to figure out where your interests may lie.

The Cyber Security Club

Students interested in expanding their cybersecurity knowledge should consider joining the Cyber Security Club, where members can learn and connect in different areas of the field. The club welcomes students from any major, making it a great opportunity for students who are already studying cybersecurity as well as those who simply want to discover the field more without making a huge commitment.

Through meetings and activities, students can learn from one another and develop useful skills. Members can participate in ethical hacking tournaments, learn from alumni, and apply the skills they learn in the classroom! The club has also partnered with UWE’s (University of West England) cybersecurity organization, creating opportunities for students from both universities to learn from one another and participate in competitions together.
